The Tamrakar name has shaped copper and brass in Patan for three generations. Today, I carry that heritage forward through Mane House — blending ancestral repousé technique with the precision of modern design tools.

A craft carried through
three generations

Repousé — the ancient art of shaping metal from behind with hammer and punch — has been the heartbeat of my family for three generations. My grandfather first pressed copper into form in the narrow lanes of Patan, then my father refined the art and formalised the business. In 1999, Mane House was officially registered, giving our ancestral work a name the world could find.

I grew up watching hands move over metal with a patience and precision that no machine can replicate. Every ridge hammered, every motif traced, every surface burnished — each one is a conversation between the maker and the material. I have inherited both the craft and the responsibility to keep it alive.

Today, I am also bringing new tools to an old tradition. Digital design through Canva, Adobe Illustrator, and AutoCAD allows us to plan intricate patterns with precision before a single hammer falls — expanding what is possible while staying true to what is timeless.

Ancestral skills,
living techniques

Repousé is our foundation — but the Tamrakar workshop has always offered a full range of Newar metalcraft disciplines, each practiced with tools and methods passed down through the family.

  • i.
Repousé & Chasing — Copper & Brass Our core art. Metal is shaped from the reverse using punches and hammers, building three-dimensional relief images of deities, mandalas, and traditional motifs. Each piece can take days to complete.
  • ii.
Ritual & Temple Metalwork Custom-crafted offering vessels, incense burners, butter lamps, and temple ornaments for Buddhist and Hindu shrines — made to order using traditional measurements and iconographic rules.
  • iii.
Decorative Panels & Wall Art Large-format copper panels featuring Patan's iconic temple motifs, peacock designs, and narrative scenes — for homes, hotels, and collectors worldwide.
  • iv.
Custom & Bespoke Commissions Bespoke work designed to a client's specification — portraits, architectural ornaments, corporate gifts, and commemorative pieces crafted entirely by hand.

Where tradition
meets digital design

As the third generation of our family in this craft, I've introduced digital design into our process — not to replace the hand, but to give it better plans to follow. Complex patterns are drawn digitally before any metal is touched, improving accuracy and opening up design possibilities that were difficult to achieve freehand.
